Yendi Notes

I thought I was going to have a heat stroke this morning. We
took the fencing, shovels, posthole diggers, wire cutters and water
out to Kulkpeni this morning. Our plan was to get out there early;
measure the land; and set the corner posts before it got too hot.
Well, it was already hot this morning when we got up. By the time we
got loaded and got out to Kulkpeni it was even hotter. We were
sitting in the truck waiting on Timothy when he called to say that he
was going to be late. He had to take his wife Rita to the hospital
because she was coughing and having chest pains. He said he would be
back in a little while. A little while turned into an hour. The
temperature just kept rising. The guys had never seen any posthole
diggers. They thought they were wonderful. Everyone had to take
their turn using them which did not hurt Steve’s feeling in the least!
We knew the ground would be too hard to do much digging in so we took
along some water to wet the holes and make the digging a little
easier. It took the men longer to decide where the boundaries were
than it did to dig the holes.
It was over 100 degrees by the time we took a break for lunch.
The guys helping us did not say anything about the heat; they just
said they were hungry. We had to go back to the mission house to get
2 more cement fence posts and pick up the rest of the fencing so we
stopped at one of the local chop bars (outdoor restaurants) and bought
lunch for everyone. After we fed the guys they were ready to go
again!
I had a terrible headache so I decided not to go back for a
second dose of that heat! I sat in the cool air conditioned bedroom
and did some more paper work.
Steve got back to the mission house about 2:30. He said that
they had gotten the rest of the cement post set and the men were going
to set the smaller post tomorrow afternoon after church service.
Today did not start off as a holiday but it ended up being a
holiday. Mr. Iddrisu was late for work this morning so we called him
to make sure he was ok. He said that he was going to take the day off
because it was the final day of the Damba Festival. Nazo had already
told us he was taking off for the festival too. Steve and I were
going to go out to Kulkpeni to work so there was not going to be
anyone here to open the house or the Child Center. We told Mr.
Iddrisu to call the girls and tell them we were all taking a holiday
today.
Take care and continue to pray for us and for the work we are trying to do.

In His Service,
Steve and Kandie
